Electrifying the Titanic is my analogy to reveal the limitations of the “electrify everything” proposed solution to humankind’s dilemma. We could replace the Titanic’s old polluting old coal/steam engines with electric engines, but she would hit the iceberg anyway. The iceberg in my analogy is all the other existential crises we face. I highlight the problems with our current climate myopic paradigm which ignores the reality that of the 7 planetary boundaries we have breached 5 are not climate related but just as threatening to our future existence. I go through these planetary boundaries individually. Then I touch on the driver of all the crises, that is our obsession with economic growth. Finally, I uncover the delusions that allow the climate harm to continue; the ‘decoupling’ myth, the non-existent energy transition and the associated resource pyramid conundrum, the myth of carbon dioxide removal and ‘nature based’ climate nonsolutions to fossil carbon and then Jevons paradox (why none of our climate ‘mitigations’ are working. The climate crisis is just one of many but crucially they are all symptoms of overshoot, thus there is only one solution for us to have a liveable future and that is massively reducing consumption of everything.
